The vehicle

The most famous car in London.

The Fairway was the last of the classic FX4 line, the upright, black, purpose-built London taxi first seen in 1958 and built, in one form or another, right up to 1997. Few shapes are as instantly recognisable anywhere in the world.

Ours is a genuine ex-London licensed cab, an LTI Fairway from 1993, in traditional black with the honest character of a car that worked the city. Inside it keeps the original London cab layout, with the partition, tip seats, a working meter and the 'For Hire' light.

There is a nice quirk to the model too: the makers once tried to sell it in the United States, but the export never took off, blamed on its small engine and the lack of an internal bulletproof dividing screen. In London, of course, it became a legend.

Where ours came from

Saved from the scrapyard.

This cab came within a whisker of being scrapped. Its previous owner rescued it from the breakers, swapped, in fact, for some bike parts and a couple of twenty pound notes, then set about bringing it back to life.

Restored and cherished ever since, it now turns heads wherever it goes. Park it next to a modern taxi and you see exactly why people still fall for the original: the upright stance, the chrome, the character that no new cab can copy.

That is the car you hire, a genuine, characterful London cab with a story, looked after by people who love it, not a lookalike.
