Trabant 601S · Genuine East German classic · Cold War icon · London based, nationwide
The Trabant 601 is the car of the Eastern Bloc, the boxy, two-stroke people's car that came to symbolise life behind the Iron Curtain and, when the Berlin Wall fell, the images of freedom that followed. Ours is a genuine 601S with all its period charm intact. It is an evocative classic picture vehicle for Cold War and spy productions, film, TV, events, PR and photoshoots across London and nationwide, and it can be dressed in-house to any period scene.
Driven only by our team, on set or moved into position for a static hire. You are welcome to sit in for photographs. Self drive is not offered unless separately agreed.
Owned by us, hired directly from us
Every vehicle in our fleet is wholly owned by Klassic Garage. We are not a broker or middleman for other people's vehicles. We take real pride in our own collection, and we know each vehicle's history, character and abilities inside out, knowledge that comes with every hire, whether it is working on set or out on display at an event.
A genuine slice of the Eastern Bloc, unmistakably Cold War, for productions, events and shoots across London and nationwide.
Behind the Wall
Nothing places a scene behind the Iron Curtain faster than a Trabant. A perfect hero or background car for Cold War, spy and period dramas, adverts and music videos, driven on set by our team.
An unusual, charming draw at classic and themed shows, retro and 1980s events and history days, as a driven feature or a static display few people have seen in the flesh.
A quirky, memorable anchor for retro, music, fashion and heritage brand activations and press days, and a genuine slice of the DDR that brings Ostalgie character to editorial and fashion shoots.
Built in East Germany from the late 1950s, the Trabant 601 became the everyday car of the DDR, powered by a simple two-stroke engine and bodied in a distinctive lightweight material. Buyers often waited years for one, and it went on to symbolise ordinary life behind the Iron Curtain.
When the Berlin Wall fell in 1989, it was Trabants that streamed through the checkpoints, and the little car found a second life as a symbol of that extraordinary moment. Today it is a genuine piece of Cold War history.
Ours is a real 601S, kept in honest period condition. We hire it as it is, and our team can dress it in-house for a specific Cold War or period scene to suit a production.
